Omega Watch

Omega Watches: The Last Timepiece You'll Need
The necessity of a good watch has spurred an entire industry around the creation and distribution of wristwatches alone. Yet over the years, the Omega Watch has stood out as one of the most versatile and reliable in this industry. Created by Louis Brandt, Omega Watches have kept time for numerous events in history.
The Alpha of Omega Watches
The Omega watch company was founded in 1848 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. From their creation until today, every single Omega watch is a masterpiece. The precision and superior movement of Omega watches soon found recognition worldwide. As early as 1900, it was officially appointed the official watch of the Grand Prix at the Paris World Fair.
A Watch of Olympic Proportions
The Grand Prix was only the beginning of the brand.s involvement in sports, as it was appointed 21 times to be the official time keeper of the Olympic Games. It brought new innovations to the games, such as the electronic watch in 1952 at the Helsinki games. In the very same year, the company received the Olympic Cross of Merit for its outstanding performance and continuous support in the sports industry.
Omega watches are known for their superior movement, and precision. Therefore, they are highly reliable, so it was with little surprise that their Speedmaster model was chosen in 1965 by NASA to be the official chronometer, only to be yet again on the wrist of Neil Armstrong as he stepped on the moon on July 21, 1969.
Even on Earth
Whether you are planning a moonwalk, or just trying to manage your life here on earth, it is comforting to know that Omega's precision craftsmanship is available to anyone. The purchase of an Omega watch is such a wise investment, that collectors aspire to include one in their holdings. Omega watches hold their value, especially the models that have gemstones and precious metals.
With their reputation for accuracy and versatility, it is easy to understand why owning an Omega watch is viewed more as an investment than a purchase. Sporty, professional or elegant, there is an Omega watch that is just right for you.

Removing scratches from jewelry

Removing scratches from jewelry usually requires professional restoration, and while you can remove surface scratches at home, professional restoration produces better results without risking more harm to the jewelry. This is a case where a little prevention goes a long way toward avoiding the cure. In fact, most minor scratches are preventable, because it is through improper care and inappropriate polishing or buffing that many of these scratches occur.

Preventing Scratches

Start by limiting exposure to substances that cause a film and tarnish your jewelry. Substances such as hair spray, hair mousse, air fresheners, and perfume can leave a residue on jewelry that is difficult, if not impossible, to remove. Even soap from your morning shower can leave a dull film on your jewelry. If you wait until after you have finished your daily grooming routine to don your jewelry, you won't expose it to the caustic chemicals in these products.

Never use a household cleaner or any cleaner not specifically formulated for use with jewelry to clean your jewelry. When you use water to clean your jewelry, distilled or filtered water is your best choice. Keep your jewelry away from chlorine, and remove it before swimming or entering a hot tub. Use a jewelry polishing cloth instead of a paper towel, towel, or other material. Always rub lengthwise, never in a circular motion, to avoid scratching jewelry.

Improper storage can also cause scratches. First, ensure that your jewelry is bone dry before storing it. Instead of piling jewelry into a cardboard box, a drawer or a jewelry box, give your jewelry some space. Use storage that contains dividers. Store your silver with an anti-tarnish agent or in a tightly sealed zipper plastic bag. Don't store diamonds with any other jewelry. Diamonds will scratch softer jewelry.

Before you use an ultrasonic cleaning machine or a commercial cleaner, check with your jeweler. Each is suitable for some stones and metals, but none is suitable for all stones and metals. Your jeweler can guide you in safe home cleaning, and one phone call can save you an expensive commercial restoration.

Removing Scratches

In general, you only want to try to remove surface scratches yourself. Attempting to remove deeper scratches yourself may result in ruining the finish, and that may require professional restoration. It's cheaper to have deep scratches restored professionally from the beginning.

A jewelers rouge polishing cloth contains jewelers rouge, the substance that jewelers use to polish jewelry when they make it. The impregnated rouge, made from finely ground stone particles, removes small scratches from metal jewelry as it cleans, restoring it to its original luster and brilliance. When using it on silver, it buffs the tarnish off without scratching the underlying silver. The cloth will last approximately two years, and even if it turns black, you can continue to use it. You cannot wash the cloth, because washing removes the jewelers rouge from the cloth. Do not use anything with jewelers rouge on stones or pearls.

Just Don't Do It

You may have heard that you can clean sterling silver with toothpaste and a toothbrush. Brushed silver is the only kind of silver on which you should use a toothbrush. In fact, if you attempt to polish brush silver with a jewelers rouge cloth or a chamois, you may eventually wear away the satin finish.

Don't attempt to remove scratches from pearls or platinum. Pearls are considered soft gems, and you'll only make matters worse by removing the finish if you attempt to remove scratches yourself. Platinum presents the opposite problem. It's a very rare, hard, dense metal, and your jeweler is equipped to remove scratches without damaging the metal.

One final word of caution: you can find anything on the Internet, and that includes professional jewelers' supplies. In most cases, you are asking for trouble by ordering these products and attempting a do-it-yourself repair at home. Your jeweler is highly trained and experienced in their use, and you are not. If you find scratches on your jewelry, you can make matters far worse by trying to remove the scratches yourself. Fine jewelry is expensive. When you buy fine jewelry, invest in its upkeep, and it will serve you the rest of your life. Invest time in preventative care, and you won't have to worry about removing scratches.

Oil-free watches are a reality, but how good are they?

It has been described as the Holy Grail of traditional watchmaking: a watch that runs without a drop of lubricant. For as long as clocks and watches have been made, oils have been essential to lubricate, protect and keep their intricate mechanisms moving.

Yet oils change with temperature and use - or lack of use - and, more importantly, degrade over time, affecting the precision and reliability of the watch.

In the 1970s, watchmakers experimented by using plastic parts in some oil-free movements; but the plastic wore quickly and the watches did not stand the test of time.

Now, the advent of silicon and nanotechnologies may give watchmakers the breakthrough that they have been searching for.

"These new technologies offer possibilities which seemed unthinkable a few years ago," said Rolf Schnyder, president of Ulysse Nardin. "These are giant steps for the industry."

Ulysse Nardin, along with Jaeger-LeCoultre, has been one of the leaders in researching and developing the new materials.

"Different brands like Ulysse Nardin, Breguet and Patek Philippe have taken different approaches in their search for a movement that will work forever," said Carson Chan, managing director and watch specialist at Bonhams, Hong Kong.

In 2001, Ulysse Nardin first announced a major breakthrough with the Freak. A revolutionary design, the Freak featured two escapement wheels which were etched from silicon instead of the usual steel, and needed no lubrication. So far the company has sold 650 of the original model and has launched several additional versions, the most recent being the Blue Phantom.

"The escapement in silicon has proven to be very reliable," Schnyder said. Since 2006 the company has offered the technology to other watchmakers through Sigatec, a joint venture with Mimotec, a Swiss microcomponents maker.

Ulysse Nardin has also experimented with polycrystalline diamond and has patents pending for a balance wheel, hairspring and escapement made in cultured diamond.

"This material is excellent in terms of being very light and antimagnetic," Schnyder said. "It has good impact resistance and friction properties and runs without lubrication. However, it is frightfully expensive to produce."

Jaeger-LeCoultre introduced the use of lubricant-free ceramic ball bearings in 2002 in its automatic winding mechanisms. Last year, it unveiled its Master Compressor Extreme LAB, which has an entire movement that works without lubrication.

In addition to silicon for the escapement wheel, Jaeger-LeCoultre has experimented with new materials, including carbonitride Easium - used in nuclear engineering - to replace the traditional jewels; a synthetic crystalline black diamond in place of the traditional ruby pallet stones; graphite powder in place of barrel grease; carbon fiber; and platinum iridium.

One example of the Extreme LAB has been made. In severe testing it has continued to operate successfully at temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees Celsius, or minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit. "This is a breakthrough, as previously no watch could withstand below 20 degrees Celsius as the oil would freeze," said Xavier Dufoix, managing director of Jaeger-LeCoultre Southeast Asia.

Dufoix said the company planned to produce 20 Extreme LAB watches in the next five years, each retailing at around €190,000, or $300,000. The first is due to be delivered at the end of this year. The limited edition reflects the amount of time and effort taken to manufacture the components with new materials, rather than the cost of the project.

"JLC believes that this technology will set new standards for the entire watchmaking industry in the coming years," Dufoix said, "as this in itself represents a big step forward in the revolution in the standards of watchmaking. But it will take necessary time for the watchmakers and manufacturers to become well-versed in and master this technique."

Most brands have no plans to go completely oil-free, though some have started to incorporate a few oil-free components in their watches. Patek Philippe in 2005 introduced a new Caliber with a high-tech silicon escape wheel for its self-winding Annual Calendar wristwatches, and Audemars Piguet's Cabinet No. 5 model, unveiled in 2006, has a new escapement design that avoids the need to lubricate the pallet stones.

"It is unlikely that all wheels of a Patek Philippe movement will be made of silicon," said a company spokeswoman. "The use of silicon will remain limited to those components in which the specific material's advantages such as low mass, high hardness, antimagnetic behavior, oil-free operation, corrosion resistance, etc., are of crucial importance.

"Any new innovations must bring a real measured benefit of improving the reliability and precision of the movement."

How to set day date on Bulova Accutron 2182 movement

How to set the date and day of week on Bulova Accutron 2182 movement In order to fast set the date number, pull out the stem and move hour hand to the position between 10 and 11 pm midnight, (just before the 24 hour time change, just before the date advance) and push in the stem and you can now fast advance the date without resistance. If you feel resistance do not force the date advance. Go around to the 10 - 11 position again, push in the stem and try again, as you may only be at the 12 and not 24 hour position. if you miss it, go around again. Do not force the fast date advance. To fast advance the day of the week, pull the stem out and advance the hour to midnight, after the day changes, back the hour hand (counter clockwise) to the 6 pm position and go back to midnight and repeat as necessary. When backed off enough you should hear a slight click. To assure you are in the correct day date sequence, set the day of the week and date one day prior to what you want to show after setting the correct time. Than in the time set mode (stem pulled out) turn the watch stem so the hands move clockwise and advance the date to the proper day and date. You are now at midnight. Continue to advance to the time you desire.

Official Bulova Instructions: Directions for setting the ACCUTRON Day and Date Model I. Follow these instructions in sequence for "first time" setting: Set The Day Of The Week 1. Pull crown "out" when second hand reaches 60 second marker. All hands will stop. 2. Move hands forward until day changes. (This establishes midnight.) 3. Rotate hands backward to approximately 5:30 and then forward until day changes again. 4. Repeat process until proper day appears (disregard the date.) Set The Time 5. With the crown still in "out" position, continue to turn hands forward until minute hand is slightly ahead of desired minute marker; then turn back to this marker. (If setting the watch after 12:00 noon, advance hands an additional 12 hours.) 6. When time standard being used to set watch reaches 60th second, push crown "in." Set The Date 7. With crown in its normal "in" position, turn it clockwise (away from you) to desired date. Note: see above if resistance is felt. Note: The date will advance automatically at midnight, provided a.m. and p.m. have been established (step 2). On the first day of each month, following a month with less than 31 days, advance the date manually. II. The following instructions are for any desired resetting of the time, the date, or the day: To Reset The Time Hands may be turned in either direction. Exact hand synchronization may be achieved as follows: 1. Pull crown "out" when sweep-second hand is exactly at 60 second marker. All hands will stop. 2. Turn hands until minute hand is slightly ahead of desired minute marker; then turn backward to this marker. When time standard, by which you are setting your timepiece, reaches the 60th second push crown "in" (without turning). All hands will start instantly. To Reset or Advance The Date With the crown in normal "in" position, turn it clockwise (away from you) to the desired date. To Reset The Day Follow sequence for "first time" setting.

Watches Buying Guide-Select a Watch Warranty

After you have found the perfect watch, take some time to find out whether it comes with a warranty and what that warranty entails before you make a final purchase. Good warranties will ensure that if your watch has any defects, they will be repaired for free, subject to certain conditions. Warranty terms and the parts it covers however can differ by watch manufacturer and seller.
Determine who can offer a watch warranty

When shopping for a watch on internet ensure you check the listing to see who provides the warranty, or if one is even provided at all. If there is no warranty information listed, contact the seller for more information.

The most extensive type of watch warranty, original manufacturer's warranties, only apply when you buy a new watch from an authorised retailer. These authorised retailers have permission from watch manufacturers, like Omega and Fossil, to sell their watches. Watches sold through other channels, pre-owned watches, and used watches are usually not covered by the manufacturer’s warranty.

Some sellers and retailers also have pre-certified watch programmes. These sellers might provide warranties of their own that cover repairs to merchandise they sell.

Find out what a watch warranty promises

A watch warranty is a contract to repair a watch at no cost so long as you meet certain conditions. It is not a guarantee. Warranties typically cover defects in materials and workmanship, but do not cover certain parts, such as bracelets and straps, normal wear and tear, or abuse. For instance, a case, glass, or crystal damaged by excessive wear might not be covered. Similarly, damage caused by mishandling, ie. water damage on a non-water-resistant watch, does not fall under the terms of a typical warranty.

Some warranties only cover the watch in the country where the watch was purchased, for example, Singapore. If you need to have a watch repaired under warranty, most service warranties require you to send the watch to specific locations for repair. Make sure you only have your watch repaired at an authorised repair shop as other repairs may void your warranty. Bear in mind that some warranties require you to pay postage charges for replacements and repairs.

Discover the duration of a watch warranty

Ensure you read watch warranty terms. Some manufacturers require you to register your watch as soon as you buy it from an authorised dealer so that the full length of the warranty will apply. Some manufacturers only offer warranties that provide limited coverage for two to five years, while other manufacturers may provide limited warranties for the lifetime of their watches.

Protecting valuable jewelry

It goes without saying that you must take certain precautions if you own valuable jewelry. Lax security, insufficient coverage, and poor judgment may cause you to suffer a huge monetary and sentimental loss. According to the Department of Justice, nearly $1 billion worth of jewelry is stolen each year. Despite such an alarming figure, there are steps you can take to protect your investment and ensure that you are fully covered in the event of a loss.

If you own fine jewelry, it is imperative that they are properly appraised and insured. An accurate appraisal can help you determine how much insurance you will need before you purchase your policy. An appraisal will also ensure that your insurance claim is processed in a fair and prompt manner, and that you are not left with uncovered expenses. Before buying a piece of jewelry, you should ask the salesperson if your purchase comes with a written appraisal. If it doesn't, make sure you ask him or her for as much written documentation about the product as possible.

It is recommended that you get your jewelry appraised every 2-5 years. Since the costs of jewels and precious metals fluctuate often, you need to have current valuations of your items. Most insurance companies can refer you to a reputable appraiser who will be able to determine how much your jewelry is worth. You should make sure that your appraiser is a certified gemologist.

The best type of appraisal for jewelry is a replacement cost appraisal. This kind of valuation verifies the design, authenticity, and monetary value of the item. You may also want to consider buying an endorsement for the appraised value. That way, if your jewelry is lost of stolen, your policy will reimburse you for the full amount.

Once your item has been appraised, the next step is to make sure it is insured. Having adequate coverage will ensure that you will be properly compensated in the event of loss or theft. The type of coverage you need is usually dependent on the monetary value of the jewelry, where you store it, and if you travel with it. You need to make sure you get the best coverage for your situation.

Most insurance companies recommend that you purchase a valuable articles policy, also known as itemized coverage. Valuable articles policies itemize each piece of jewelry you want covered in great detail. Each itemized piece is then described and valued. This is important because in the event of loss of theft, you will not need to worry about proving ownership or the condition of the items in question. When selecting your policy, you need to know EXACTLY what items and circumstances will be covered. Make sure that your policy covers breakage, mysterious disappearance, and jewelry that is lost or stolen while traveling.

If you're a homeowner, you may be wondering why you cannot simply add your jewelry to your homeowner’s insurance policy. While it may be possible that your homeowner's insurance policy will provide coverage for your items, chances are you may have to pay an expensive deductible if your jewels are not scheduled (which costs extra). Furthermore, unlike valuable articles policies, homeowner’s insurance policies typically don’t cover breakage or mysterious disappearance.

It is also important that you keep your jewelry locked in a secure location. Your jewelry should be kept in an inconspicuous location, preferably in a lockbox or safe. Keeping your items under your bed, in your dresser drawer, or in a jewelry box is an awful idea-these are the FIRST places thieves will look when searching for things to steal. Try to keep your jewelry in areas where a thief wouldn't think to look.

If you don't wear a particular piece of jewelry often, you may want to consider storing the item in a safe deposit box for added security. There is a nominal fee for this service, but many insurance companies will offer you a discount on your policy if you do not store very expensive items at home. Installing a security system will reduce the chances of theft even further and is strongly recommended.

You should make sure you implement safe practices while you are away from home as well. When traveling, you should NEVER check your jewelry with the rest of your luggage; you should always have these items on you while en route to your destination. If you are staying in a hotel, you should store your valuables in the hotel safe deposit box instead of simply leaving it in your room. If you prefer to leave your jewelry at home when you travel, you should consider putting it in a safe deposit box, especially if you are away from home often.

How to Shop for Sapphires

When shopping for Sapphires, quality and price depend in part on color. Fine yellow, orange, and pink sapphires will command a fairly high price due to their rarity. Other colors, such as the dark, dark blue that almost looks black, will be very inexpensive.

Steps
1. Learn that the most valuable sapphires have a medium intense, vivid blue color. The best sapphires hold the brightness of their color under all different types of lighting. Any black, gray, or green overtones mixed in with the blue will reduce a stone's value. In general, a more pastel blue would be less preferred than a vivid blue but would be priced higher than an over dark blackish blue color.
o Blue stones are best with a violet overtone; a green overtone is less desirable, as are gray-tinged or lightly colored blues.
o Pinks should be of uniform color. Best is "hot" pink; little to no lavender or brown overtone.
o Purple should resemble fine amethyst, but somewhat redder.
o Stay away from yellows with a brownish cast. Orange-Yellows are worth more than pure yellow.
o Greens should not show an olive or gray tinge.

2. Know that as with all gemstones, sapphires which are "clean" and have few visible inclusions or tiny flaws are the most valuable. However some very fine sapphires, in particular those from Kashmir, have a velvety mist-like texture which enhances the richness of the blue.

3. Sapphires are most often cut in a cushion shape - a rounded rectangle - or an oval shape. You can also find smaller sapphires in round brilliant cuts and a wide variety of fancy shapes, including triangles, squares, emerald cuts, marquises, pear shapes, baguette shapes, and cabochon cuts, or smooth domes.

What are Watches Made With? Popular Watch Materials

Watches are made out of different materials depending on the brand and the model. However, these are the most popular materials used in the making of watches. All or most of the watches that are featured on TheWatchery.com are made out of one of the materials listed here. The following segments explain the material, as well as the positive and negative aspects of the material.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel, St, has a composition of being an iron-carbon alloy, mixed with chromium and nickel. The best thing about watches that are made out of stainless steel is that they are not only light-weight, they are also highly resistant to corrosives. However, it is stainless steel watches which are most easily scratched. Still, stainless steel is one of the most ubiquitous watch materials and it can be used in a number of different types of watches.

Ceramics

Ceramic, or Cm, has a composition of zirconium oxide. There are a number of positive aspects to watches made out of ceramics. Items made out of this material are heat resistant and very durable. As a point of interest, NASA used ceramics on their space shuttle heat shields. However, many people find ceramics to be too modern for comfortable use. Still, watches made out of ceramics are great for luxury watches.

Titanium

Titanium, Ti, is titanium alloyed with other materials. There are a number of strengths to watches made out of Titanium. First of all, this material allows watches to be light-weight, since it is a light-weight material. It also allows watches to be very durable. While it weighs half the amount of stainless steel, it is about twice as strong. Nonetheless, Titanium is difficult to work with, so it can be expensive to repair. Luxury sports watches are going to be best suited to be made out of titanium.

White Gold

White Gold, WGd, is pure gold, typically mixed with silver or palladium. White gold is very popular and effective because it looks like steel and it is more discreet than watches made out of yellow gold. Still, people often mistake white gold watches for watches made out of stainless steel, and not all wearers appreciate this mix up. White gold is best suited for watches that are high-end, luxury or heirloom dress watches. Physical Vapor Deposition Physical Vapor Deposition, PVD, is steel with an added layer of either carbides, nitrides or oxides, which have been deposited ionic attraction, which is completed atom by atom in a vacuum. It is a masculine patina, but it is not one of the most scratch resistant materials. Eventually, it is possible for the original steel color to show through because of this. This material is best suited for sports watches.

Yellow Gold

Yellow Gold, or YGd, is pure gold, which is 24 karat, that has been alloyed with other materials. This is a great material because it is so shiny and traditional, but some people do not appreciate yellow gold as much because it is a very soft material that can scratch and otherwise become damaged, the more pure the metal is. However, this is a great material for showy watches that want to attract attention.

Rose Gold

Rose Gold, RGd, is pure gold, 24 karat gold, that has been mixed with varying amounts of copper. Many people appreciate this material because of its rich and distinctive coloring - but it can still be prone to dents and scratches. This is the best material for formal evening watches as well as very dressy sports watches.

How to Use an Analog Watch as a Compass

If you are bereft of a compass but need to know north and south you can use a traditional clock face to approximate those directions and this will tell you how.

Steps
1. Determine if you are in the northern or southern hemisphere.
2. In the northern hemisphere:
1. Hold the watch horizontal.
2. Point the hour hand in the direction of the sun.
3. Bisect the angle between the hour hand and the twelve o'clock mark to get the north-south line (substitute 1 o'clock mark during daylight savings time). North will be the direction further from the sun.
3. In the southern hemisphere:
1. Hold the watch horizontal.
2. Point twelve o'clock in the direction of the sun.
3. Bisect the angle between the hour hand and the twelve o'clock mark to get the north-south line.
4. North will be the direction closer to the sun, south the other way.

Tips

· No good with digital watches!
· The further away from the equator you are the more accurate your results will be, as the sun will cast a longer shadow.
· If is cloudy or overcast find an open area as far from sun obstructions as possible and hold up a stick, branch, ruler, pole or other straight object. A slight shadow will be cast in all but the worst conditions.
· You don't need an actual watch, you can draw a watch face on a piece of paper and the hack works just fine. It's nothing to do with the watch itself, other than knowing the time.
· For best results set your watch to "true" local time, in other words without adjustments for daylight savings time.

Warnings

A quick trick like this is good but do not rely on this information in life-critical situations. Buy a compass watch instead, or a GPS system.

WHY SHOULD I BUY A HIGH END WATCH LIKE ROLEX OR OMEGA

TOP REASONS FOR PURCHASING QUALITY PRE-OWNED WATCHES FOR USE, COLLECTION, AND INVESTMENT

The two most important points of advice I could give someone regarding watches are: Almost always, you get what you pay for...and, if you buy a quality, pre-owned watch, and maintain it in good condition, your watch will act as an investment.

Listed below are the three points that I will argue in the Rolex vs. Timex debate. Individually, none of them are enough to support my argument....but collectively they provide some rational support for the Rolex, or other high end watch.

1) PRESTIGE
This is a very simple one. You get to use it. You get to wear it. People get to see it. Although many people will deny it, one of the most compelling reasons to wear a nice watch is the prestige. If you are at a wedding or a reunion, you just want people to see it. If you are a businessman, a nice watch symbolizes your success. This is the most obvious reason why one might want to own and wear a high end watch, but it's not the most important reason.

2) QUALITY
Like I said...you get what you pay for. A high end watch will last for years and years, and can be passed down as a family heirloom from generation to generation. Quality watches are more durable and can better withstand wear and tear. They will run for years and years, and with a little TLC and maintenance, they can be kept in like new condition.

On the other hand, low end watches wear quite easily. In many cases, wear or damage is irreparable. Most inexpensive watches will end up in a landfill after only a couple years. Many people even call them "disposable" watches for this very reason.

As a general example, a rough guess would be that 99% of Rolex watches are probably still in use after 25 years....while perhaps 99% of Timex watches are in the garbage within the first 10 years.Let me provide a great example. My biggest problem is that I have a bad habit of constantly smashing my watch into metal door frames in my work office. If I wore a Timex, each time I did this, a huge scratch would inevitably be added to the watch. However, my Rolex GMT Master does not get a scratch. Instead, IT MAKES A SCRATCH on the door frame. Every Rolex or Omega watch I have known someone to wear for any extended period of time has maintained its original “like new” visual appearance for years.

The end result is that a high end watch could literally outlive you and your children, and you might keep the same watch for decades rather than buying a new $25 or $300 watch every couple of years.

3) INVESTMENTA high end watch’s investment appeal is probably the most compelling reason to own a quality, pre-owned watch. Prestige and quality won’t convince your spouse to agree with this argument. But a pre-owned watch’s ability to appreciate might be convincing.

Watch Sizes - How to buy a watch online

Watches are available in a large variety of sizes. People are sometimes overwhelmed and unsure of which size to buy. Especially online, where you can't try on the watch before purchasing and you cannot see it in person. Unless there is a ruler in the picture of the watch, it's hard to know how big it will actually look on your wrist.
Watch Cases:

Here are some general guidelines of watch sizes to help you narrow down your options. Keep in mind that sizing depends on the style and manufacturer. Some tend to make very petite watches, while others make larger models. All measurements are approximate and are measured by the width of the case.

Women’s Mini: 23mm-25mm.
Women’s Regular: 26mm-29mm
Midsize: 34mm-36mm.
Men’s: 37mm-39mm
Men’s sport: 40mm-42mm.
Mens XL: 45mm

For a frame of reference, take into account that,

A US quarter is 24.26mm in diameter and 1.75 mm thick.
A US Half dollar is 30.61mm in diameter and 2.15 mm thick.

Midsize watches: A midsize watch is a watch that is smaller than a regular men's watch and larger than a regular women's watch. Women who like their watches to be a bit bigger than normal can opt for this size. From our experience, most men find midsize watches to be too small. However, if a man is of a particularly small build, he may prefer this size.

Here is a great trick that can help you when buying a watch online:

Check the watch specifications to see the diameter of the watch (or in the case of a rectangular watch, the height and width of the case), take out a ruler and draw a circle with that watch diameter (or a rectangle for a tank-style watch). Cut out the shape and put it on your wrist. Voila! Imagine the style and you're one step closer to making your decision.

Hint: If the watch measurements are specified in millimeters, and your ruler does not have millimeters, you can simply convert the millimeters to inches by multiplying the millimeters by .03937. For example, if a watch is 20mm wide, just do 20 x .3937=.7874. You can round that off to .8 and draw a circle with a diameter of a little more than 3/4 of an inch. Or, if you'd rather work in cm, you can convert mm to cm by multiplying the millimeters by 0.1. So 20mm will equal to 2 centimeters. If you're not good with math - just type "convert 20mm to inches" into google and they'll do it for you!

Watch Bracelets:

Most ladies watch bracelets come standard at 6.75 to 7 inches. Men's are typically 7.5 to 8 inches. (divers watches are an exception because they are designed for use while wearing a wetsuit.)

If you purchase a watch with a metal bracelet, there is a good chance you will have to have one or more links removed to fit your wrist properly. This is best done when the wearer is present so that the watchmaker can see the shape of your wrist to determine which links to remove. Sometimes it is better to remove a link from the right side of the watch, other times they will opt to remove it from the left side, depending on the size of your wrist and how the watch fits. You may also need to remove only a half link, as opposed to a full link. That is why most companies do not size the watches for you.

We suggest that you take your watch to a reputable local jeweler for sizing. Expect to pay a nominal fee (around $5-$10) for this service. Do not attempt to size your own watch! You may damage or scratch the watch and bracelet. After the links are removed, keep the extra ones! Occasionally, a watch bracelet may break and it is a lot easier (and cheaper) to have the bracelet repaired with your own links than ordering and shipping new ones.

In the case that a watch bracelet is too short (not the usual case), sometimes a full link or half link can be ordered from the manufacturer. Depending on the availability of the watch (if it is new or discontinued) and manufacturer, the prices can range from $25/link to $150/link. If your wrist is larger than most, you should contact the company before purchasing and ask them to measure the bracelet for you to make sure it will fit. If it is too small, and you really like the watch, you can contact the manufacturer to find out if you can order additional links.

We hope this will help you when you are choosing a watch size and/or sizing your watch!

Watchmakers Tools. What To Look For When Buying.

One of the most interesting aspects of the watchmaking trade are the tools that one gets to use. The one large drawback is the lack of good sources of supply. Most companies that manufactured tools when the watchmaking trade was in full swing in the 1940's have gone the way of pocket watch companies. Out of business. There are still a few good companies such as Bergeon, Boley, and Levin. However, buying new tools from these companies, can be very expensive.

The watchmakers lathe is one tool that you are sure to need. They are used to remove damaged balance staffs on watches. You will also need a good set of collets. I have found that the best lathe is the Levin or Boley. Most of these lathes have either hard cone bearings or ball bearings. They are both designed to be adjusted and it is very rare to find a lathe that is worn out and not operational.

Another important item is the watchmakers bench. There are many new ones available and are shipped needing to be assembled. Again, many good ones have been found on eBay. One of the best companies that made the majority of watchmakers benches was J. H. Rosberg of Chicago. These benches were the correct height and most had 13 drawers for storing tools along with an apron for catching parts and holding tools that you were using at the time. Most of these benches were open tops. You could also purchase one that had the roll top feature that kept dust from off the bench or people out of your bench. This style is rather rare and can cost several thousand dollars for a perfect oak example.

When looking for watchmakers tools on internet it is important to avoid buying collector item tools unless you plan on using them. These are antique tools such as rounding up tools for gear cutting and other early watchmakers tools. If you plan on working with watches you should plan what you need to use and buy only those items that you need to repair a watch with. Later on it is fun to buy a few old tools for display and enjoyment. These old tools make great conversation pieces.

When buying from a seller on internet, be sure to ask questions about the tool you are interested in buying. Many sellers specialize in old watchmakers tools and can give you answers to your questions.
Staking sets are in great supply. Again I have found that the Levin or Boley are great tools. Another American brand is the K and D staking set. These sets are the most common that you will find. It is important to buy a set where the stakes and anvils are in very good condition and not worn. Most of these sets were well used so pay special attention to condition.

There is an old saying that a craftsman is only as good as his tools. This saying applies today as one looks for watchmakers tools to use in the shop. Always try and buy the best that you can afford. If taken care of, watchmakers tools will last another lifetime.

Why Replica Watches are in Demand and How to Identify Them?

To identify a fake watch one should know the features of genuine models. Look through the catalogues of the original watch manufacturers and remember the main aspects of a real timepiece. It is important to be aware not only about the face of the watch but also about its bracelet, clasp and of course the back of the watch where you may find the stamp of the manufacturers.
It is also important to understand that if a model is not shown in the catalogue or on the website of the original manufacturer it doesn't mean it is a fake. Various watchmakers have many collections the timepieces of which cannot be fully displayed.

Pay attention to specific features: Most of replica watches do not possess specific features of a genuine timepiece like the transparent case back or a helium release valve. If you find some replicas that really include such features then it doesn't mean that they work properly. The back of the case can be made of some glass which can be easily broken when the watch is dropped.

Fake chronographs can have for instance non-operating subdials and some functions like the stop watch. Some replica watches may have color combinations or textures of their bezel that cannot be seen on the genuine timepiece. The mechanism on the clasp of the bracelet can have a less complicated mechanism.

Identify the older or less known genuine watches: Some famous brands like Cartier, Omega or IWC create models that look similar to their older versions. Although these watches are original sometimes even collectors collectors may mistake some watches as being just a skillful forgery. Some watches are created for specific reasons, whether on demand or for international expositions. These are made in a small number so they may be unknown to some people.

Some original watch manufacturers engrave their serial numbers in specific places of the watch. For example Omega timepieces have an 8 digit serial number which is laser etched and in most cases it can be found on the back of a lug or the case.

Breitling Replica Identification

Movement First! An easy way to reveal a Breitling replica from the original Breitling watch is by its movement. It is important to make sure that the movement of the genuine timepiece is automatic and not battery powered and its chronographs work. To understand whether the movement is automatic or not, it is necessary to take a look at the second hand. The latter is sweeping on the timepiece with an automatic movement. It means that the hand does not tick every second. Having a look at the second hand you can see that it smoothly moves through a series of some very fine ticks.

Chronographs: The original chronographs work when pushing small buttons located at the side of the watch. If you see that the chronographs can act as stop watches, then you got the original watch. On the fake Breitling models the chronographs simply track the seconds as well as hours and days. The Breitling replicas have chronographs that whether do not function or are unable to act as timers.

Why Not Prohibited?

The possession of a replica watch is not considered to be illegal but their production can be considered so. This is because fake watch manufacturers violate the law concerning the copyrights and trademarks of the original watch producer. There are several reasons that can explain the fact that fake watches are not stopped by the law or legal actions of the original manufacturers.

First of all the watch market encompasses a huge number of fake watch manufacturers. Thus, when one manufacturer of fake watches is stopped several other replica timepiece creators appear on the market. It is like a tendency, some kind of axiom. This cannot be stopped. Legal actions require huge costs and original manufacturers are aware of the fact that their actions against fake watch manufacturers are just a waste of time and money.

In order to stop the invasion of fake watches the watch market requires government intervention on the international level but recently there are other important international problems that need to be solved besides fighting the replica watch manufacturers.

The second reason is that the replica watches do not have a serious impact on the original watch manufacturers. The latter will lose much more money on legal pursue than on letting the fake timepiece producers do their job. And finally, the legal manufacturers do not want to be involved in some cases like the sale of a fake watch by the price of an original. The latter are the cases of fraud handled by the police. For the manufacturers of original watches there is no need to be involved since in the fraud cases there are no sellers or dealers that have any connection with the original producer.

A Glance into the History

The industry of watchmaking has a long history throughout which the manufacturers of various timepieces not always were able to survive either because of competition on the market of watches or because of economic, political and/or social aspects. Some watchmakers that have become well-known today had a long way to go before they achieved the status of famous.

First there were some revolutions during the 19th century, then there occurred the First World War and afterwards humanity felt the impact of the Second World War. The watchmaking industry survived and continued its production increasing its sales of mechanical winding or automatic wristwatches. The prosperity was about to end when the manufacturers of mechanical timepiece faced the quartz watches that came mainly from Asian countries.

The rivalry among mechanical and battery powered movements during 1980s ended and each company finally found its customer.

Highlights on Replica Watches

Today the manufacturers of genuine timepieces have another issue to face, which is related to replica watches. The latter have already become popular thanks to their price, which is much lower than the original watches, and the exactness of their reproduction.

The most popular models of watches designed by the famous brands are copied by various replica watch manufacturers. The price of copied timepieces may vary from ten dollars and till several hundreds of dollars. It is quite obvious the fact that the more peculiarities of a genuine watch are accurately copied, the higher the price for a replica will be. Still, no matter how brilliantly the timepieces are copied, the price of a fake watch is still lower, which is why there is a high demand for replicas.

Today the original models are copied quite well, having even the manufacturer's logo, serial numbers and many other aspects with the help of which it is easy to detect whether the timepiece is genuine. As for the durability of replica timepieces - it can vary from two or three years and up depending on the quality of materials used in their manufacturing as well as the assembling.

The replica watch "trend" is not a new one. Among various copies one can find watches that were copied many years ago. The old fakes were copied from the brands that were not very popular and the price of which was also not very high. These old replicas were relabeled. A different logo of the brand on the dial of a fake watch was repainted.

But it is still up to the consumer to decide what kind of timepiece to purchase. The main advantage of a replica watch is its price but the main advantage of a genuine timepiece is its reliability and durability. Thus the main choice refers to the mix of quality and price.

Water Proof Watches & Water Resistancy Levels

It is important to note that the Fair Trade Commission has ruled that the term "Water Proof" as it relates to watches constitutes unfair trade practices.
Look for resistancy levels on the dial or case back of the watch. An absence of any indication indicates extra caution should exercised when wearing the watch to avoid any contact with moisture. This is true in expensive dress watch (particularly 14K ladies watches) as well as lower valued watches. Refer to the warranty sheet for further restrictions. If no such sheet is available the chart below is fairly standard.

If your watch leaks, there is water in watch, you have a diver watch you must be aware of these important facts regarding your watch. Never allow anyone to open your watch, who does not have the ability to pressure test the watch for you.

NO INDICATION:Not resistant to splashing or other accidental contact with moisture of any kind. WATER RESISTANT (30M/100Ft/3ATM/3Bar)Will resist moisture from accidental splashing, rain, sweat, etc. Not suitable for immersion. WATER RESISTANT (50M/160Ft/5ATM/5Bar)Will resist moisture from accidental splashing, rain, and showering or swimming* WATER RESISTANT (100M/300Ft/10ATm/10Bar)Watch may be worn during snorkel or skin diving, if properly sealed.* WATER RESISTANT (200M/660Ft/20ATM/20Bar)Watch may be worn during standard scuba diving.*

* It is essential that the case back and crown be properly tightened down, if applicable. Buttons must not be operated when watch is suberged at any depth, unless expressly approved in the operating manual. Under no circumstance should a watch be worn in the water if there is any sign of a broken seal or gasket around the case back or crystal, or other compromise of the integrity of the case.

Alternate depth designations other than meters (M) will likely be indicated as Feet or ATM's or Bars.

1 Bar =1Atmosphere.
1 Atmosphere=14.696 1lbs/sq. in.
1 Atmosphere=33.899 feet or 10.33 Meters below surface of water.

In general terms 1 ATM is NOT considered a depth indication for a watch. A watch indicating 1 ATM should not be considered water resistant.
Remember, a watch has 1 ATM of pressure on it, at the surface of the water.

All measurements are of STATIC pressure and cannot be directly translated to real-life water pressure situations.
